Love these ideas as simple winter decor. With the weather we've been having (although I love the cold-I know, I'm the only one!) these seem to fit right in. The old fashioned jars (top) definitely add to the charm, so you may need to troll your favorite thrift/antique store! You could fill with just about anything-I'm loving acorns and natural bits lately...

I recently designed a logo for a client that went through quite a progression from beginning to end. I wanted to share a peek at the creative process behind a logo design...

Of the original concepts, these two were the client's favorites so we went from there...

They became combined into this version, with a simplified color palette:

This version seemed a little too flat, so I dove in a little deeper to add visual interest and complexity into the design, while keeping the same basic message:

Here is the final version. We went back to a wider range of colors within the same family, and incorporated a more complex design while still invoking the feeling of a community.

All day while I work I sit and listen to Pandora radio, and sometimes I find myself listening to a song just because I like the album cover... These are a few that I find unique and inspiring. I've recently signed up for emails from Anthropologie (which is a store I love, btw...), and I am in love with their current campaign. The texture and details in the designs are so awesome, and the "torn edges" still looks fresh and unique to me. The more I look at it, the more I find in there.... good stuff!!

4th of july plans

I'm so excited- next weekend I'm heading up to the Outer Banks to stay in my family's o-l-d beach cottage. Isn't it awesome?? It doesn't have air conditioning, but the way it's situated it's perfectly comfortable (almost) all summer long. Can't wait for a nice tropical drink on the screen porch in the evenings... and waking up and stumbling right out onto the beach. Plus, they usually shoot the fireworks off of Nags Head pier which is only about 1/4 mile away-perfect!

Brings back a lot of fun memories-when I was a kid we spent every summer Sunday here with my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins going to the beach and having lunch on the porch.

Anyone else have any fun plans for the 4th of July?

A couple diy projects that are inexpensive ways to freshen up your decor! Here is the whole article, from Sunset Magazine. Diy time!!

Above, use cd jewel cases to hang photos, prints, patterened paper or other art. The unifying size creates a cohesive look.

Inexpensive art idea- use the designs from a calendar to cover a large space. Go even cheaper by hanging from picture wire with binder clips or paper clips...get creative!

Old boxes make interesting displays outside (or inside...) Try succulents if you're thumb is more black than green!!

Talk about some clever marketing. I love this idea from Cool Haus- a mobile ice cream stand that serves just ice cream sandwiches named after mid-century design icons-founded by two former architects. Yes, I am a nerd, but fortunately so are a lot of other people! Here is a link to the Dwell Magazine article...

"...Natasha Case and co-founder Freya Estreller have an ice cream truck that travels around and alerts potential customers to its whereabouts via Twitter. They offer five prefab flavors: Frank Behry, Mintimalism, Mies Vanilla Rohe, Richard Meyer Lemon Ginger, and Oatmeal Cinnamoneo. Their website has the "plans" for each, so you can see what your cookie and filling will consist of."

Plus, that seems like a really creative use of Twitter, something I'm still getting the hang of! Love it!

...is something I'm not great at. But I love thinking about getting myself organized, so naturally I love this galvanized key cabinet. It just looks like a great place to put all those little aggravating things like keys, and mail, and the junk you carry in each day. All that stuff that piles up by my kitchen sink....(oh the joys of not having an entryway!!). Anyway, I love the look of this, especially the little hooks on the inside. From Pottery Barn.

After doing some work (finally!) in my yard yesterday, I'm all inspired to get our outdoor living space spruced up for the spring and summer. I've been saving these photos for a day like today- this little courtyard garden is in a space that's only 12x16, but it is cozy, calming and lovely. And it's located in Minneapolis of all places! I love that it doesn't seem as if they spent a ton of money...the planter boxes seem easy enough to make. I'm thinking about trying something similar. Enjoy!

I started my vegetable garden last night...I bought a bunch of seeds yesterday and am getting them started indoors. This is really the first time I've done this, but I am so so excited!! I will (hopefully) be growing:

bibb and romaine lettuce

rainbow chard

some kind of sweet onions that are supposed to grow to 2 lbs!

I'm also doing some herbs, and once the weather warms up a little I plan on buying some tomato plant and bell pepper plant seedlings..I will post updates, keep your fingers crossed!!

Just finished reading this book: My So-Called Freelance Life-How to Survive and Thrive as a Creative Professional for Hire by Michelle Goodman. It was slam full of great information on freelancing and working for yourself in any capacity...in this economy, more and more people are turning to their own skills to help generate extra income on the side. This covers everything from taxes and billing to drumming up business, marketing yourself and staying sane when working from home. I highly recommend, whether you're currently a freelancer, or thinking of hawking your skills in some capacity in the near future!

And that pretty much seems to cover it...lots of really fun vintage stuff, a lot in the realm of the "industrial" look, but all kinds of different things! My only complaint is that a lot of the stuff I liked was sold already.

So, exciting news last night. Someone who bought one of my rightleftstudio calendars this year showed a little diy modification on her blog (which is super-fun btw...). She used a skull stamp so that it would fit in with her skull-themed bathroom. Admittedly, I had a little trouble picturing this, but upon seeing the photos, I think it looks really awesome! Plus, what a clever way to hang a calendar...

Right now I really want a new dining table. I don't have a dining room, but I really don't need one anyway...I'm perfectly happy with my sunny little kitchen spot. BUT, my current table situation is just not cutting it. It's ugly, old (but not old in a good way, old as in I got it from Kmart in college), small, and did I mention ugly? Plus it only has one chair, which is ridiculous, and it's always covered in mail, bike helmets, whatever.

In fact, I'm looking forward to sprucing up my whole dining setting, so I've rounded up some inspiring photos of tables and their environments... enjoy!

ps. As far as the tables themselves, that bottom one is gorgeous...

easy headboard idea!

Maybe I'm just really into chalkboard stuff lately, but I like this idea of using a framed chalkboard as a headboard...I think using a vintage-y looking one like this helps, as it gives a little extra interest and texture. I'm on a mission for something to serve as a headboard in my own bedroom, so I'm in search of ideas...

btw, when I just went back to the original post to link it, it appeared that people over on Apartment Therapy were extremely NOT into this idea...hmmm, I love it! What do you guys think??

A couple easy and inexpensive diy ideas for hanging photos:

I like the idea of hanging photos from a wire, like on the left in this photo. ( Ignore the arrows, I can't remember what those are supposed to be pointing to...) This is a great diy idea- I'm thinking of doing this in 2 or 3 rows, and using binder clips to hold the photos. (ps, love that bench at the foot of the bed!)

This is a really simple idea as well- Those are pants/skirt hangers! I just saw packs of these at Target in the $1-2 area by the front door...I think I may have to get a few. I received a beautiful art poster for Christmas that is an odd size, and a custom frame just isn't in the budget these days, so I'm thinking of putting something weighted at the bottom and using one of these hangers at the top, at least for a temporary solution! I'll post pictures when I get around to that:) Things have been busy busy lately!!!

I actually saw this on a tv commercial last night, and was intrigued enough to check out the website this morning. And I'm impressed, and thrilled! Cape Fear Riverwood harvests logs and timber out of the Cape Fear River and uses it to create beautiful flooring, countertops, mantels and more. This is a beautiful way to promote sustainable building, by using trees already cut down and preserving forests. Above and below are some lovely photos from their website. Check them out here. So, living where I do, it's at least a 5 hour drive to the nearest Ikea. But there is a new store opening in Charlotte (which is still a pretty good haul, but oh well), and next month I'm making the trip! I'm starting to make a list of things I need to look for, so I don't miss anything. I am planning on getting rid of my hideous, dirty carpet and putting down floors, and they have some really awesome ones . My pick is below (Tundra), as is my choice for NEW COUNTERS (Pragel, in stone effect black)!!!! The new year is bringing with it a new zeal for home projects- it's been a long time! My little house is definitely in need of some shiny newness.

By the way, I did paint my kitchen this weekend, but it's been so cloudy I can't get a good photo- I promise I'll post before and afters soon!

I want to sit at this table and have orange juice and croissants this morning! Isn't it just sunny and pleasant? A different color scheme than what I'm usually drawn to, but I really like the warmth. And I think the tablecloth is really cute.

Can you tell I'm excited?? It's been a while since I've done anything new around my house, and I can't wait. This week I am painting a chalkboard wall in my kitchen- I really love the look of a black wall, and I'm not sure I will use the chalkboard-ness so much, but I just really like the texture of chalkboard. But if the mood to create does strike, the canvas is all ready! I will be posting before and afters, but for now, a few inspiring photos to get us ready!

Seriously, another Scandinavian post. But this is the most amazing home ever. I LOVE it, and am ready to move. Location: Sweden, land of all things cool apparently. The outside shot of the birch trees is what winter should look like, and I am in love. Via doorsixteen via remodelista.

Lately it seems like everything that I like is from somewhere in Scandinavia (not sure that's a proper term, but it works for me:)...for example these gorgeous photos from the tine k catalog, a Denmark-based lifestyle shop. (The photos have been scanned, so I apologize that the quality isn't better). I really dig the black hutch above with the collection of black dishes-it's a really beautiful little tableau.

And the photo below may be Christmas decorations, but I love the twist of the black with the natural touch of the chestnuts(?). Just really different!

Above is the Bertoia chair. I would love to have two of these, one at each end of my nonexistent dining room table Isn't this a beautiful photo? Found on flickr... LOVE the colors and the weathered door.

And this is the Wegner Sawbuck Chair, available from Room and Board. A 1951 design that I think is still really current feeling today-I just really like this chair! It's Scandinavian feeling to me, and I'd like to drape a nubby, soft blanket over the back. I don't know where I would put this one, but since it's about $3000, I guess it doesn't really matter!

Broccoli- quite tasty, definitely worth a go

Soup- ridiculously spicy. I love curry, and perhaps went a little overboard...? I don't recommend as is, but I plan on trying a few modifications. Stay tuned...

Sorry I don't have any beautiful/artistic photos of my dinner. I tried to take one with my iphone, but it didn't look very good. But I was too hungry to pull out the good camera...

Coconut Cashew Chicken Satay

Ok, I have found stumbleupon. If you haven't spent time with this yet, I suggest you stay away unless you have copious hours to kill online... I am finding ALL kinds of awesome new websites to explore! Today I love TasteSpotting, which features hundreds and thousands of beautiful food photos, and links to the recipes from other blogs. I have found a bunch of stuff I want to cook, and I love having a photo to go by (I've always hated recipes in books with no photos...). Anyway, here are a couple of my favorites. Enjoy!

I'm loving the moody black, white and gray thing right now. Some new products for the etsy shop are in the works (oh yes, I haven't forgotten about etsy!!), and this is a little inspiration for what I'm working on...stay tuned! I like the warmth and depth of some of these rooms, rather than the starkness that usually comes from simple black and white. I'd love you to share any good links or photos to other black and white products, interiors, whatever!

I love this blanket that I saw a while back- it's a vintage Swiss Army blanket. As I was searching around for a good photo to use here, I discovered that the Ace Hotel in Seattle (the Ace Hotel is the coolest place, ever) uses these in their rooms. Go figure!! Love it!

Everyone always talks about "spring cleaning", but yesterday as I was taking down my Christmas decorations, I thought - what better time for a fresh clean house than on the first day of the new year? And I mean, organizing, weeding out, and paring down. While I only got 2 rooms done so far, it feels great to know that my cabinets are uncluttered, and my kitchen table is usable once more!

A few tips from Sunset Magazine on uncluttering a space:

1. Build in flexibility: Cubbies and storage that's easily modified when your needs change.

2. Put furniture to work: Double duty pieces are great, especially in small spaces!

3. Maximize wall space

4. Access what you often need

5. Hide what you rarely use

Good luck with your own simplifying efforts, and just know that the rewards of a calming, clean space are totally worth it!

Here is a little peek of my giftwrap this year! I decided to do a color scheme of brown, red and silver, using a bunch of scrap papers and ribbons that I had laying around. Plus, that's the kraft paper that I potato-stamped last week at craft night! (That piece there was about all I got done...)
